Caring for the Parks and Greenspaces in Syracuse

Our Vision for the Parks

The SPC vision for the future of our city's greenspaces is that they become a highlighting feature of our city. For Syracuse to be seen as a city with an abundance of parks for the community to utilize and see the value that they offer. We envision greenspaces and parks that become a central location for community events, educational features, an example of sustainability for other cities and natural areas that promote a healthy and holistic wellbeing for the members of our community.
The SPC’s role in bringing this vision to life is by working in partnership with the Syracuse City Parks and Recreation Department to channel funds into the city parks, as well as advocating for and being a means of education for the parks and why they are important.

Our Story

The story of the Syracuse Parks Conservancy (SPC) began in 2008 because of the vast amount of greenspace and parks to care for and preserve in the City of Syracuse. Members from various T-N-T groups (“Tomorrow’s Neighborhoods Today”) and Park Associations throughout the city saw the need for a citizen-based organization to act as a liaison with city government. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was drafted and after a resolution was passed, Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll signed the MOU creating a formal relationship between the City of Syracuse and the SPC. In September 2009, the first Annual Meeting was held and the work on preserving our green spaces in Syracuse began. Since that first meeting in 2009 the SPC has gone on to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into our local parks. . The SPCcontinues to grow, evolve, mature and move through the life cycle of a non-profit organization and has grown from an all-volunteer board into one that now employs a full time Executive Director.
